So youve been wondering about how to start woodworking. Not only is it a great hobby but it can save you a ton of
money as well. But like anything, you have to learn the basics first--then you can begin building your own creations.
Not too many things are as self-satisfying as making something with your own two hands. Having said that, heres a few
things you absolutely need to know in order to learn how to start woodworking:
1) Understanding Wood -- Most species of wood fall into two categories: softwoods and hardwoods. Understanding the differences and knowing which type of wood is best for your particular project is important to your success. You need to understand how wood moves and how to use it to your advantage. This knowledge will serve you well all through your woodworking career.
2) Have Tools? -- Every good woodworker must have the right tools. This includes hand tools as well as power
tools. Starting out, there is no need to spend a fortune on tools. The kind of workshop you have will dictate what
kind of tools you need to have. For example, if you are setting up a workshop in your garage you may be limited by
the amount of space you have. If you have neighbors nearby, you have to consider the noise factor. In this case, you
may want to have mostly hand tools.
3) Every Project Needs a Plan -- Having the right plan is key to having a successful project. The best part is
that plans are as abundant as cornfields in Iowa. Before you begin your project, youll want to review the plans to see what tools, hardware and woods you will need.
4) Working with Wood -- Once you have the wood you need for your project, you have to know what to do with it. Youll have to learn about the different glues, joints and fasteners. Dont worry - its fun. After a while, terms like dovetail joints, mortise-and-tenon joints and PVA adhesives will be a part of your everyday vocabulary.
5) Safety First -- This may be last on this list but its first in importance. In order to minimize the danger you need to follow a few simple rules. Here are the three basic things you need to be concerned with:
Eye protection -- Safety glasses or goggles are a must.
Hearing protection - Earplugs are inexpensive so keep several sets on hand. Make sure they fit tight.
Breathing protection - Dust masks are inexpensive and work well. If you do a lot of woodworking with power tools, you may want to invest in a respirator.
These are all important steps in learning how to start woodworking. Anyone can create beautiful projects with the right
knowledge, practice and of course, the right plans. Start with a simple project and go from there. When you have more
confidence and your skills have improved, you can move on to more complicated projects. Good luck.
